GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Provides overall coding compliance and coding operational leadership for the System Wide Services.
Responsible for the daily operations of all coding, UB Abstracting functions and data request functions for 7- 20 facilities. Interprets coding regulations, policies and procedures, recommends changes as appropriate and provides relevant feedback to HIM Operations. As the coding leader, serves as the promoter of the System Wide Services and is responsible for setting the tone of the department as a service organization, continuously seeking to understand, meet and exceed customer needs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees system wide service operations of coding and abstracting functions, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, compliance and standards fulfillment according to regulatory and company compliance policies. (40%)
  • Provide relevant guidance for Coding Managers to identify and resolve internal and external issues. (10%)
  • Develop strategy, specific goals, objectives, budgets and performance standards for areas of responsibility. (10%)
  • Oversee management of appropriate personnel, providing recommendations for hiring, promotion, salary adjustment and personnel action where appropriate. (10%)
  • Provide leadership to coding management team regarding abstracting, coding quality and data requests including weekly, monthly and ad hoc reporting. (10%)
  • Monitor coding, abstracting, auditing and data request performance according to quality and productivity standards. (10%)
  • Oversee staff education and training to ensure compliance with regulatory, compliance and industry standards. (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Associates degree required from an approved Health Information Management Program.
  • Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
  • Three years of experience coding in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in coding, data quality, HC4, JC, DOH and CMS standard, data systems and reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with problem solving ability along with demonstrated leadership and customer service skills.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree.
