JOB SUMMARY

The COO leads a team of approximately 2,000 FTEs, comprised of employed and contracted resources located in domestic and off-shore locations.  This responsibility includes all professional services, client implementations, the platform roadmap, development and engineering, and customer operations. 

The COO is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for HM Health Solutions’ platform with clear objectives and priorities for the successful growth of the organization. The incumbent is responsible to ensure financial commitments are delivered through accurate forecasting of supply and demand and achievement of financial targets (e.g. per member per month).  The COO will ensure that the operations area has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and operational systems in place to ensure financial strength, operating efficiency and customer satisfaction.

The COO will foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration and instill a sense of enthusiasm and pride, by fostering a culture of accountability. The COO will be highly visible and “hands on” in order to communicate the “pulse” of the organization at all levels to support the President of HM Health Solutions.

The COO may lead a variety of enterprise-wide initiatives, requiring regular interaction with each of Highmark Health’s business units and corporate functions. These initiatives will include strategic initiatives that drive enterprise outcomes and business unit specific goal achievement.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with our customers to drive customer value creation/ customer success.
  • Work with leadership to improve customer experience and satisfaction level across all entities within scope.
  • Further develop and deliver the platform innovation agenda and roadmap.
  • Ensure team is staffed, motivated, inspired, engaged and empowered to deliver a high and sustainable performance level in an ever changing environment at a cost level the organization can sustain and reflects market realities.
  • Develop a culture of talent development and drive a continuous focus on performance improvement, including providing regular performance feedback to staff members.
  • Champion excellence in quality. Communicate to the employees the correlation between service excellence, customer satisfaction and improved operating performance and how these goals will leverage collective successes.
  • Lead the development and achievement of operational performance objectives including ensuring projects are delivered on time and on schedule, cost reductions are budgeted and achieved, as well as quality standards are set and achieved.
  • Lead the development and achievement of financial performance objectives including accurate forecasts for supply and demand.
  • Work with internal and external communications to coordinate activities of HM Health Solutions; demonstrate excellent oral and written communications to present financial results, business cases, etc. to audiences with varying levels of financial understanding, including executive leadership and the Board of Directors of Highmark Inc.
  • Translate business vision and strategy into operational tactics building organizational support and infrastructure needed to achieve this end.  Set strategies, goals, programs, best practices and compliance improvement projects for operational functions, improving operational execution and delivering on our value proposition.

EXPERIENCE

  • The COO must be an experienced technology leader with outstanding management abilities and a proven track record of executive and operational leadership.  The incumbent will have a demonstrated record of successfully leading a highly disciplined, focused technology organization that consistently delivers and achieves critical performance metrics. The ideal candidate will bring substantive managed care/health plan experience and a keen understanding of the business drivers that affect the sector
  • The position requires a hands-on, high-energy leader with strong operations, communications, and analytical skills. Candidates must have the ability to communicate a vision, achieve necessary buy-in, keep people informed, and execute successfully against short- and long-term plans. The COO will be a self-motivated individual looking to join a unique organization with significant growth potential

Required

  • 20 years of experience in leadership with at least five years in a senior executive leadership position, the current/most recent position must be one in charge of, or responsible for, operations in complex, integrated operating environment
  • Excellent operational and financial skills with a strong business, quality, mission, and results-focused orientation; has successful record of growing programs, services, market share, and profitability

  • Known for open and inclusive management style yet, also holds people accountable
  • A reputation for proactive identification of issues and finding solutions to them
